The Setting

Dishoom is a very well known chain of Indian restaurants and bars across London. The Permit Room is the bar  that you will find alongside their restaurant.

The Atmosphere

As they describe themselves, Dishoom is ‘an old Irani café that made a long trip from Bombay in 1970 to London in 2012’. As some of you may know, in the beginning of the 20th century, every street of Bombay was home to Irani cafés. Well if you didn’t know you were in London and we were now in 2018; you would probably think you’re in one of those in Bombay! The decor is that good. It is very exotic and a pleasant change of scenery for East London. Once in, they managed to make you forget about the tall buildings, grey sky and cold weather. They have taken the decor to a next level. We sat at the bar, in the ‘permit room’ which used to be the only licensed area in the restaurant, which is even cooler! With a few different rooms available, you can now order their delicious Indian food and amazing cocktails from anywhere. Special mention for their ‘verandah’ that almost makes you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle! Top top quality food, drinks and decor. Well done Dishoom Shoreditch, no doubt we’re gonna go check out your siblings now!

The Drinks

Even the drinks menu makes you travel all the way to India, with exotic names such as ‘Hunterwali’s Julep’, ‘Ipa Paanch’ or ‘The Kohinoor Fizz’ you are fully immerged into what the 1970s in Bombay would have been like – or at least what we believe it would have been like!

‘DISHOOM SHOREDITCH IS A TOP QUALITY RESTAURANT AND BAR. THE DECOS IS A HUGE BONUS, WE LOVE SPENDING TIME THERE – IT MAKES YOU TIME-TRAVEL! MUST GO!”

Dishoom – From Bombay with Love

THE OLD IRANI CAFÉS of Bombay have almost all disappeared. Their faded elegance welcomed all: rich businessmen, sweaty taxi-wallas and courting couples. Fans turned slowly. Bentwood chairs were reflected in stained mirrors, next to sepia family portraits. Students had breakfast. Families dined. Lawyers read briefs. Writers found their characters.
Opened early last century by Zoroastrian immigrants from Iran, there were almost four hundred cafés at their peak in the 1960s. Now, fewer than thirty remain. Their loss is much mourned by Bombayites.

You wait hours for a table and eat Indian food.

Avoid during peak hours, if an hour-long+ wait (mostly outdoors and standing) doesn't sound like fun. House Black Dal =🥇
